Safety in the rail industry is paramount and in the role of conductor you are responsible for the safety of customers on board our trains. You will carry our regular operational checks on train and at intermediate stations, you will also deal with any unexpected and/or emergency situation as they arise. Conductors patrol the train and are on hand to provide customers with information and support relating to their journey. They will help customers who may need special attention or assistance. They also ensure that all customers have valid travel tickets via full ticket checks and issuing tickets where necessary, handle cash and process payment card transactions. They are responsible for communicating customer safety and journey information via regular public address announcements. This role will involve assisting passengers with disabilities to board and alight trains and could involve the use of a portable ramp which weighs up to 15kg, the portable ramp may be required to be carried the full length of a train. We are looking for a clear and confident communicator with excellent problem solving and team working skills, coupled with the ability to work well under pressure, and to think on your feet, particularly in disruptive situations. We offer an attractive reference salary of £35,427 per annum on completion of training & 5% individual commission. During training, which may last up to 6 months, the trainee salary is £21,741 per annum. Your training, which will take place in Glasgow, will include induction, customer service, commercial skills, conductor rules, first aid, fire safety, disability awareness and conflict management – will be professionally delivered to give you all the tools to need to master this surprisingly varied and interesting job. Selection process: Selected candidates will be invited to sit on-line assessment & attend classroom assessment. If successful, the next stage will be interview. The final stage for successful candidates will be a medical examination and drugs/alcohol screening. Appointees must submit at least two satisfactory references, Disclosure Scotland clearance and complete a six-month probation period. Due to the nature of the post and rail industry safety requirements there are certain medical and fitness standards that you would be required to meet if successful.
